Calcium carbonate is becoming widely used to fortify milk powders, yoghurts and UHT milk. With the increased focus on calcium fortification, food manufacturers are also using the product in breads, cereals and fruit juices. Lactose intolerance has also seen a demand arise for fortification of dairy substitutes such as soy which are naturally lower in calcium.

Calcium carbonate is also an important processing aid for polishing rice and regulating the pH in both distillaries and antibiotic production. It is also used in bread improvers where it acts as a food source for yeast and helps reduce moisture.
